World Leaders Reject Trump’s Ukraine Peace Proposal

Must read

Ukraine has been cautioned against surrendering territory or reducing its military forces under pressure from Donald Trump. Discussions at the G20 summit in South Africa saw international leaders rejecting certain aspects of the US President’s peace proposal for Ukraine.

A joint statement by Keir Starmer and other G7 leaders, excluding the US, emphasized that Ukraine’s borders should not be altered through coercion. The Prime Minister mentioned that he is anticipating a conversation with Mr. Trump soon and is also scheduled to speak with Volodymyr Zelensky.

There are no plans for the PM to visit Washington DC as the focus remains on urgent discussions planned in Geneva. Officials from the US and Ukraine, including the US president’s special envoy and secretary of state, are set to participate in urgent talks in Switzerland.

The UK’s National Security Adviser, along with counterparts from France and Germany, will attend the Geneva talks following an early departure from the G20 summit. Trump has issued a deadline of November 27 for Ukraine to respond to his 28-point peace plan, including provisions for a ceasefire and territorial adjustments.

While the US proposal has elements considered essential for lasting peace, concerns have been raised by Mr. Starmer and allies regarding potential vulnerabilities for Ukraine’s armed forces. The statement, jointly issued by several nations and EU bodies, underscored continued support for Ukraine and the need for consent from EU and NATO members for certain plan elements.

President Zelensky has assured his nation that Ukrainian representatives are prepared to safeguard national interests and prevent future invasions. Amidst challenging times, Ukraine faces a critical decision between maintaining dignity and preserving key partnerships, as highlighted by Mr. Zelensky and other world leaders.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin cautiously welcomed the US proposal, suggesting its potential as a foundation for a final peace settlement. The ongoing developments in Ukraine continue to draw global attention.
