A woman has come forward to share the emotional experience of fulfilling her parents’ wishes to end their lives together. Corinne Gregory Sharpe, 61, had a strong bond with her parents and was unaware that they would ask for her assistance in such a profound decision.
In 2021, Corinne helped her parents, Eva and Druse Neumann, end their lives through medical aid in dying (MAID). Eva, 92, had been active but was facing health challenges, including aortic stenosis. Despite medical recommendations for surgery, Eva chose to let things progress naturally.
After a fall and hospitalization in 2021, Eva’s health declined rapidly, and Druse, 95, also began experiencing health issues. Druse, who had a fear of dying, eventually expressed his desire to die alongside his wife through MAID.
Corinne navigated the process of qualifying her father for MAID, leading to a poignant moment where the couple chose August 13 as their final day together. They spent their last moments as a family, sharing memories and laughter.
On the chosen day, surrounded by loved ones, Eva and Druse peacefully ended their lives together, holding hands and sharing a final toast. Corinne shared that the process, though emotional, provided a sense of closure.
Corinne hopes that by sharing her family’s story, she can raise awareness about end-of-life choices and promote open discussions about death. She believes in the importance of individuals having the right to make decisions that alleviate suffering.
As the UK considers legislation on assisted dying, Corinne’s story adds a personal perspective to the ongoing debate. The proposed UK legislation would allow terminally ill adults to apply for an assisted death under specific conditions, emphasizing the importance of compassionate end-of-life care.
