The White House administration has announced plans to completely demolish the East Wing in order to construct a new luxurious ballroom for former President Donald Trump. Despite previous assurances that the new ballroom design would not impact the existing structure, recent images showed machinery tearing down a portion of the historic building, confirming Mr. Trump’s change in plans.
In a statement today, the White House confirmed the necessity to remove the current structure for the new ballroom project. President Trump clarified that the demolition was essential for the proper execution of the project and stressed that it would not encroach on the main White House building.
The construction work has garnered significant attention globally and in Washington DC, where an individual rammed a car into a security barricade near the White House estate. The suspect was promptly apprehended by security personnel.
The estimated cost of $250 million (£187 million) for the ballroom construction will be privately funded. Despite concerns raised by former East Wing staff and attempts to halt the project, the development is expected to be completed soon, possibly by the upcoming weekend.
In response to criticism, the White House released a statement dismissing the backlash as “manufactured outrage” and provided historical evidence of past demolitions and construction projects at the White House dating back to 1902.
