“Warning: Safety Flaw in MG 3 Hatchback”

Must read

Car shoppers are being advised to avoid a popular compact car made by MG, a Chinese-owned automaker, following safety assessments that revealed a significant flaw. Euro NCAP, a crash safety organization, identified a major issue with the MG 3, prompting them to recommend exploring other options. Consumer watchdog Which? has also issued a warning against purchasing this model.

The MG 3 hatchback, offered in petrol and full hybrid versions starting at £17,245, was introduced in February 2024 and has seen over 9,000 registrations in the UK by the end of March 2025. During testing, Euro NCAP found a critical safety failure in the MG 3 related to a frontal offset crash test, considered one of the most rigorous assessments in their program.

Specifically, a component in the driver’s seat adjuster failed during the test, causing the seat to twist upon impact at 62mph. This was the first instance of such a failure in Euro NCAP’s extensive history of testing vehicles dating back to 1997. Despite this serious incident, the MG 3 still received a four-star rating out of five due to its performance in other safety aspects of the crash test.

Euro NCAP highlighted concerns about the seat latching mechanism in the MG 3, emphasizing the potential implications for driver safety during collisions. Dr. Aled Williams, Euro NCAP’s program director, voiced alarm over the issue and recommended consumers look into safer alternatives. The DVSA in the UK is actively monitoring the situation.

MG has pledged to address the seat latching mechanism and driver’s airbag in future production starting in August and October, respectively. However, these changes will not be retrofitted to existing vehicles. Euro NCAP stressed the importance of stringent safety standards in light of the rapid growth of China’s automotive industry and the influx of new models into European markets.

Formerly a British brand, MG is now fully owned by SAIC Motor Corporation, a major Chinese car manufacturer. Despite the safety concerns, MG reported a significant number of car sales in the UK compared to other popular brands. In response to the safety issues raised by Euro NCAP, MG assured customers of their proactive investigation and commitment to addressing the matter.

This statement was provided in response to the specific concern raised during Euro NCAP testing, indicating ongoing cooperation with authorities to ensure safety standards. MG emphasized the importance of Euro NCAP’s feedback and their dedication to resolving the issue promptly.
