“Veterans Get Digital ID Cards on Smartphones”

Must read

Today marks the launch of digital ID cards for veterans that can be accessed on smartphones.

Approximately two million veterans will have the option to download these cards from an official government app, simplifying the process of verifying their veteran status.

This initiative aims to enhance veterans’ access to benefits like housing assistance, discounts at various establishments, and the ability to share their military service history with healthcare providers for tailored medical care.

While the digital cards are voluntary, veterans will still have the option to use physical ID cards if preferred.

This digital ID card launch by the Government is the first of its kind, with plans for a trial run of digital driving licenses later this year.

Recently, concerns have been raised regarding digital ID cards by opposition leader Keir Starmer, who proposed mandatory digital IDs to combat illegal immigration, sparking debates on data privacy and civil liberties.

Ian Murray, the minister for digital government, views the veterans’ ID cards as a valuable trial that can address public apprehensions and demonstrate the effectiveness of such credentials.

Accessible through the GOV.UK One Login app, the veterans’ ID card is part of an ongoing effort to introduce a comprehensive digital wallet, which will include additional digital credentials like driving licenses in the future.

The groundwork for the digital wallet is already integrated into the One Login app, meeting stringent security standards set by the government.

Initially, the veterans’ card can only be utilized in person, but online functionality is expected to be added in the upcoming months, offering more convenience to users.

In support of this initiative, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized the importance of providing veterans with streamlined access to essential public services through the digital veterans’ card.
