UK Sports Events to Face Disruption in Emergency Alert Test

Must read

UK sporting events on Sunday afternoon will face disruptions as the Government conducts an emergency alert test, triggering loud siren sounds on phones nationwide. The test, scheduled for 3pm, will involve approximately 87 million phones emitting the alert, marking the first such test since April 2023.

Previously utilized during emergencies like Storm Darragh and Storm Eowyn, the alert system is designed to disseminate crucial information swiftly. Concerns have arisen over potential disruptions or delays during Sunday’s events due to the loud alert activation.

The nationwide test aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the alert system in crisis situations, such as floods or storms, to ensure prompt responses to safeguard lives. Every individual connected to a 4G or 5G network in the UK will receive the alert, emphasizing its critical role in saving lives during emergencies.

Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, highlighted the importance of the test in enhancing emergency preparedness. The test will entail a ten-second loud siren on all connected phones, even those on silent mode. Citizens will receive a notification that it is a test, alleviating concerns for immediate action.

Tourists and individuals with non-UK phone numbers will also receive the alert, as it broadcasts from local phone masts. Notably, the alert will not sound for phones in airplane mode or switched off initially but may activate upon reconnection.

Sporting events like the England vs. South Africa cricket match and the Rugby Super League derby will be impacted, prompting organizers to adjust schedules to accommodate the alert. The emergency alert test underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing emergency response systems for public safety.
