UK Mobile Networks Crack Down on Foreign Call Center Scams

Must read

Mobile networks such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are set to restrict foreign call centers from posing as banks in a move to combat scams. These networks have committed to enhancing their infrastructure in the coming year to prevent overseas call centers from spoofing UK numbers.

Number spoofing, a tactic used by scammers to alter their caller ID and make it appear as though they are a trusted entity, will be addressed through this crackdown. The initiative aims to clearly indicate when calls originate from abroad.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) will be leveraged to detect and block dubious calls and texts. Advanced call tracing technology will also be deployed to assist law enforcement in tracking down scammers nationwide.

Key industry players, including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), have joined forces to combat fraudulent activities.

Recent statistics reveal that 96% of mobile users base their decision to answer a call on the displayed number, with the majority hesitant to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.

Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the detrimental impact of spoofed calls, enabling scammers to deceive individuals with false identities and promises. The government’s commitment to combatting fraud includes a significant upgrade to the mobile network infrastructure to eliminate call spoofing within a year, reducing the tools scammers use to defraud people.

To report scams and fraud, individuals can contact Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040 or visit the Action Fraud website. In Scotland, scams can be reported to Advice Direct Scotland at 0808 164 6000 or through their website. Additionally, scam emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk, and suspicious text messages to 7726 for free.

If suspicious of a scam call, individuals are advised to disconnect immediately and verify the caller’s contact details online. Contact your bank promptly if fraud is suspected, and change any compromised passwords without delay.
