“UK Key Player in Gaza Peace Summit, US Official Praises Role”

Must read

A senior US official commended the significant contributions of the UK and an important aide to Keir Starmer in the ongoing efforts to convene the Gaza peace summit happening today. Steve Witkoff, the Middle East special envoy for Donald Trump, highlighted the valuable role played by Jonathan Powell, the Prime Minister’s adviser. Witkoff’s remarks seemingly contrasted with the criticism directed at a UK minister by the American ambassador to Israel, who labeled the minister as “delusional.”

In a recent post on X platform, Witkoff expressed gratitude for the United Kingdom’s indispensable support and coordination that have led to the current milestone in Israel. He specifically praised the exceptional efforts of National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, in an interview with Sky News, mentioned the UK’s behind-the-scenes influence in shaping the peace talks, acknowledging the crucial involvement of the American government in reaching this stage.

Following these statements, US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, retaliated on social media, questioning the credibility of the Cabinet minister and attributing any success to Donald Trump.

Keir Starmer is set to address the Gaza peace summit in Egypt as a significant step towards ending the ongoing conflict and violence. He traveled to Sharm El-Sheikh to participate in the peace plan signing ceremony alongside US President Donald Trump, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Starmer is anticipated to emphasize the importance of achieving lasting peace and security for the region, underscoring the UK’s commitment to supporting the peace plan’s implementation. During the summit, Starmer is expected to announce £20 million in UK aid, part of a larger £116 million pledge, to assist in providing essential services like water, sanitation, and hygiene to civilians in Gaza.
