“UK Cracks Down on Illegal Vaping Sales with Tough Penalties”

Must read

Criminals selling illicit vaping products on UK streets will soon face harsh penalties and potential imprisonment as part of a significant government crackdown outlined in the upcoming Budget.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to unveil enhanced enforcement powers for Border Force and HMRC to immediately confiscate illegal vaping items. Those breaching regulations will be subject to fines of up to £10,000 and could be charged with new criminal offenses.

To ensure authenticity and traceability, all vaping products sold in the UK will be required to feature a digital duty stamp with a QR code for easy verification by consumers and enforcement authorities. These measures aim to disrupt unlawful networks distributing black-market vapes, safeguard compliant British businesses from unfair competition, and safeguard the public from unsafe, unregulated goods, thereby revitalizing Britain’s retail sector post a surge in unscrupulous outlets.

Moreover, the initiative will restrict opportunities for fraudsters, with the implementation of mandatory licensing for vaping products and intensified measures against tax evasion and unscrupulous company directors.

A government insider emphasized the urgency of addressing the influx of illegal vaping products on high streets, affirming the Chancellor’s commitment to cracking down on offenders and safeguarding consumers and law-abiding businesses.

Additionally, plans for a Vaping Duty Stamps Scheme (VDS) were initially introduced in the 2024 Budget, with the stamp incorporating digital features for authentication and traceability, including manufacturer information. HMRC will offer comprehensive assistance and transitional stamps to aid the sector in transitioning to the mandatory system effective from October next year.

Manufacturers of vaping liquid in the UK can register for the scheme starting in April, with retailers granted a six-month grace period to sell existing stock without stamps.

In a separate development, it was reported that Ms. Reeves will utilize the Budget to target illicit operations in car washes, nail bars, and takeaways. The announcement will include a £1million allocation to establish a specialized investigative team aimed at identifying and penalizing enterprises violating employment and tax regulations.

These investigators will collaborate with Immigration Enforcement and HMRC to expedite inquiries and take decisive action against transgressors. The initiative follows Keir Starmer’s Pride in Place strategy, which pledged £5 billion to regenerate disadvantaged areas, including the rejuvenation of abandoned retail spaces and derelict venues.

Under these new measures, local communities will be empowered to block the establishment of new vaping and gambling outlets to enhance the cleanliness and integrity of British high streets.
