UK Considers Sanctions for Sudan Conflict

Must read

The United Kingdom is considering imposing sanctions on individuals involved in the violent civil conflict in Sudan, with Members of Parliament being informed that the aftermath of massacres is visible from satellite images.

According to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, satellite imagery reveals distressing scenes of bodies stacked up and blood-stained sand following the capture of el-Fasher in Sudan by armed paramilitary groups. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in over 30 million people requiring urgent humanitarian assistance, with 12 million individuals displaced.

Describing the situation as the most severe humanitarian crisis of the 21st century, Cooper addressed MPs, highlighting the spread of famine, outbreaks of cholera, and other preventable diseases. She emphasized the horrific atrocities occurring in el-Fasher, including mass executions, starvation, and the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war, which have led to scenes so appalling that they are observable from space.

Cooper announced plans to expedite the consideration of potential sanctions related to human rights violations and abuses in Sudan. In a similar move, the Conservative government previously sanctioned businesses supporting the SAF or RSF and froze assets of companies associated with either faction in April 2024. Efforts are underway to negotiate a three-month humanitarian ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of crucial aid to the conflict-affected region.

Meanwhile, Cooper criticized Israeli actions to address violence by settlers in the West Bank, labeling them as inadequate. She stressed the importance of stability in the West Bank for achieving sustainable peace, following the approval by the UN Security Council for a temporary international stabilisation force in Gaza. Cooper emphasized the need for continued momentum, advocating for the swift deployment of an international stabilisation force and trained Palestinian police to uphold the ceasefire and prevent potential exploitation by Hamas. Additionally, she called for the prompt establishment of a Palestinian committee to support peace efforts.
