Must read

A massive earthquake has caused buildings to collapse and residents to flee into the streets in Turkey. The seismic event struck the Balikesir region, sending tremors across various western provinces, including Istanbul and Izmir.

The earthquake, estimated at a magnitude of 6.1, resulted in prolonged shaking that instilled panic and fear among affected residents. The continuous tremors raised concerns as shops and other structures were destroyed in the affected areas.

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu is closely monitoring the emergency response efforts following the earthquake. He expressed well wishes to all citizens impacted by the seismic activity and assured that relevant institutions are coordinating to address the situation effectively.

As of now, there have been no reported fatalities, but assessments are ongoing, as stated by Sindirgi’s district administrator Dogukan Koyuncu. However, 22 individuals sustained injuries from falls due to earthquake-induced panic, according to Balikesir’s governor, Ismail Ustaoglu.

Numerous people have opted to remain outdoors out of fear of returning to their homes. Temporary shelters are being provided in mosques, schools, and sports halls to accommodate those reluctant to re-enter their residences.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya disclosed that three unoccupied buildings and a two-story shop collapsed in Sindirgi, with two individuals hospitalized due to panic-related injuries. The earthquake, occurring in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir, was part of a series of seismic activities in the region over the past ten days.

Geologists believe this earthquake is linked to previous tremors, with Professor Okan Tüysüz highlighting the seismic history of the area. Field surveys are being conducted to assess the damage, with authorities ensuring the safety and well-being of affected citizens.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended condolences to those impacted by the earthquake and emphasized the importance of ongoing inspection and control efforts. The earthquake’s proximity to densely populated cities like Istanbul and Izmir underscores the significance of disaster preparedness and response in the region.
