“Trump Sets Deadline for Ukraine Peace Deal Approval”

Must read

Donald Trump criticized the leadership of Ukraine on social media, accusing them of lacking gratitude towards the US regarding a contentious peace proposal. The US President reportedly set a deadline for Kyiv to agree to a 28-point plan, despite reservations from European leaders such as Keir Starmer. The plan includes making concessions to Russia, like reducing Ukraine’s military forces and forgoing plans to join NATO.

Discussions were underway in Geneva on Sunday among Ukraine, the US, and European nations regarding the peace plan. Jonathan Powell, the UK’s national security adviser, is participating in the talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that initial meetings and discussions had taken place, suggesting that the American proposals might consider Ukrainian perspectives and be crucial for Ukraine’s national interests.

However, Trump expressed dissatisfaction on social media, criticizing Ukraine’s leadership for not showing appreciation for US efforts and Europe for continuing to purchase oil from Russia. He emphasized that the peace plan was not his final offer following backlash. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen cautioned against altering borders by force and opposed restrictions on Ukraine’s military, citing potential vulnerability to future attacks and threats to European security.

Von der Leyen stressed Ukraine’s right to determine its destiny independently and choose a European path. While Starmer and other leaders acknowledged some positive elements in the US plan for achieving a just and lasting peace, they pushed back against certain aspects. Starmer also engaged in discussions with Trump about the proposed plan, emphasizing the need for cooperative efforts to establish lasting peace.

Cabinet minister Heidi Alexander emphasized the importance of Ukrainians determining their future and suggested that further refinement of the peace plan was necessary. She highlighted the UK’s influence in discussions with the US and other global leaders to facilitate dialogue and seek peaceful solutions.
