Sonia Exelby, a woman from Portsmouth, was discovered in a shallow grave in the U.S. just a week after her arrival on October 10. Concerns arose when she missed her return flight home three days later. However, the situation took a disturbing turn as it was revealed that her death might not have been a simple murder.
The tragic sequence of events began in 2023 when Sonia, reportedly struggling with mental health issues, engaged in conversations on a fetish website. These interactions allegedly escalated to discussions about extreme topics like bondage, suicide, and Sonia expressing a desire for someone on the site to end her life.
Law enforcement claims that an American man, Dwain Hall, 53, was the individual Sonia had communicated with and flew to meet for a violent outcome. Following her departure from the UK, a concerned friend raised the alarm, indicating Sonia’s vulnerable state and the risky situation she had potentially put herself in after traveling to Tallahassee, Florida.
After Sonia’s body was found in a wooded area in Marion County, an autopsy revealed she had been stabbed four times. Dwain Hall was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and first-degree murder, allegedly linked to transactions made with Sonia’s credit cards. Despite the charges, Hall denies involvement in the crimes.
According to police reports, Hall initially denied any connection to Sonia but later admitted to picking her up and taking her to an Airbnb. Additional evidence, including surveillance footage and online messages, suggested that Sonia had traveled to the U.S. with intentions of experiencing abuse, torture, and possibly death.
Hall’s account of the events portrayed Sonia as suicidal and seeking to end her life, with him assuming a role as a mentor rather than a perpetrator. The unfolding details painted a grim picture of the final days leading to Sonia’s tragic demise, with reports indicating a disturbing dynamic between her and Hall.
The investigation uncovered disturbing messages, actions, and evidence indicating that Hall had exerted control over Sonia and manipulated her into a dangerous situation. The case continues to unfold as authorities gather more evidence against Hall, who remains in custody under serious charges.
