A devastating tornado has caused extensive damage and claimed the lives of six individuals in Brazil, with wind speeds reaching 155mph. The powerful tornado struck the state of Parana, resulting in six fatalities and over 750 injuries, as reported by local officials. The city suffered widespread destruction, with 90% of the area experiencing damage.
Images from the affected city depict buildings without roofs, fallen trees, and twisted signs and poles. The tornado also destroyed numerous homes, prompting the government to declare an emergency in the region. State authorities indicated that one person was reported missing following the tornado, with five adults and a 14-year-old girl among the deceased.
The 14-year-old victim, Julia Kwapis, was swept away by the strong winds while at a friend’s house in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu. Her family, who had been searching for her, received news that she was hospitalized in a neighboring city, in critical condition. Julia, who was set to have her Catholic Confirmation, had excitedly discussed plans for the celebration with her father.
Hundreds of individuals, including children and pregnant women, were transferred to medical facilities for treatment, with some requiring surgery and others in serious condition. Local business owner Roselei Dalcandon described the storm’s impact on her business as devastating, leaving the town in ruins and raising concerns about the future.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with the tornado victims, extending condolences to the families affected. He announced the dispatch of a team led by Minister Gleisi Hoffmann to provide support and assistance to the affected areas. National Civil Defense specialists in humanitarian aid are en route to aid in rescue efforts and reconstruction, with the commitment to continue aiding the population of Parana.
