A 14-year-old teenager has tragically passed away following a shooting involving multiple teenagers at a Christmas tree lighting event in the United States.
Disorder broke out during Chicago’s official Christmas light ceremony when approximately 300 young individuals reportedly stormed the event, leading to several gunshots being fired. Shortly after, Chicago police responded to another shooting incident and found two individuals injured by gunfire.
The 14-year-old boy sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was swiftly taken to the hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Another victim, an 18-year-old male, was also hospitalized with a serious leg injury caused by a gunshot. The shootings took place around 10:40 pm.
Prior to the shootings, a large group gathered near the Chicago Theater around 9:50 pm, with gunshots heard by officers as the group dispersed. Seven teenagers, aged between 13 and 17, were found with gunshot wounds near the intersection of State and Randolph streets. Alderman Hopkins, representing the second ward district, reported that multiple police officers were also assaulted with mace and stun guns, resulting in at least one officer being hospitalized.
In a statement on X, Hopkins mentioned the chaos caused by around 300 juveniles rioting in the Loop, resulting in multiple victims being shot, including one critically injured with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the torso. Additionally, numerous police officers were attacked and injured during the incident.
Reporter Courtney Spinelli from WGNNews mentioned that officers observed a large group on the streets before gunshots rang out near the Chicago Theatre. Spinelli confirmed that the youngest victim was a 13-year-old girl who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is currently in stable condition.
An eyewitness, Linda Dixon, described the chaotic scene outside the Chicago Theatre, stating that people were running in panic following the incident. She expressed her dismay at the violence occurring during the holiday season when people were looking forward to celebrating and enjoying the evening.
Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic events.
