Matthew Coleman, 45, expressed optimism to a friend shortly before carrying out a horrific act. Despite outward appearances of a happy family life with his wife Abby and their two children, Kaleo and Roxy, Coleman had become engulfed in debunked conspiracy theories and delusions. Without warning, he abruptly left his family home with the children, leaving Abby behind as they were preparing for a camping trip.
Abby, unaware of any issues, reported the children missing the next day when they did not return home as planned. Authorities located Coleman in Mexico using the Find My Phone app, where he had taken the children. Despite Abby’s belief that the kids were safe, tragedy struck when Coleman allegedly murdered them with a spearfishing gun at a ranch.
After the chilling act, Coleman disposed of evidence and the children’s remains. A local ranchhand discovered the gruesome scene, leading to Coleman’s arrest upon his return to California. In a shocking confession, Coleman attributed his actions to his belief in a debunked online conspiracy theory, QAnon, stating that he thought his children carried “serpent DNA” and needed to be killed to protect the world.
Coleman’s wife acknowledged their shared interest in conspiracy theories but noted his heightened paranoia. Currently deemed unfit to stand trial, Coleman has been under protective custody in prison. Reports indicate that he has exhibited self-harming behavior and is struggling to communicate effectively.
