After a tiring day at the office, Aiden Sagala opted to unwind with a cold beer, unaware that it would have deadly consequences. The 21-year-old inadvertently drank liquid methamphetamine from a can he received as a gift, leading to his tragic death.
The incident occurred on March 2, 2023, when Aiden selected a can of beer from a batch given to him by his employer and brought it home. At the time, he resided in Auckland, New Zealand, with his sister Angela and brother-in-law, Billy. Aiden and Billy, accompanied by a friend, decided to sample tall cans labeled as ‘Honey Bear Beer’ imported from Canada.
Following Aiden’s first sip, where he remarked on a salty taste, Billy also tried the beer but immediately noticed an unusual flavor resembling sea salt mixed with chemicals. Aiden then contacted his mother, expressing distress and a belief that he was dying.
As Aiden’s condition worsened, displaying agitation and physical aggression, Billy sought help from Angela, who, being a doctor, administered CPR while awaiting paramedics. Tragically, Aiden slipped into a coma and passed away five days later due to multiple organ failure caused by the toxic methamphetamine dose.
The investigation into Aiden’s death uncovered a significant drug smuggling operation spanning India, the United States, and Canada. New Zealand authorities traced their inquiries to a storage unit in Auckland, where they discovered approximately 700 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine, marking the largest seizure of its kind in the country.
Baltej Singh, a local supermarket owner, was identified as the mastermind behind the drug trafficking scheme. Singh had imported substantial quantities of methamphetamine disguised as various beverages, including kombucha from the US, coconut water from India, and nearly 29,000 cans of Honey Bear beer from Toronto.
Subsequently, Aiden’s boss, known as Himatjit ‘Jimmy’ Kahlon, was implicated in processing the liquid methamphetamine into crystal meth, with security footage capturing his involvement in handling cases of beer from the storage unit. Kahlon faced charges of manslaughter in connection to Aiden’s death.
Additionally, Singh, a well-regarded business figure in Auckland from a prominent Indian family, was charged with orchestrating the illicit importation activities. The untimely demise of Aiden ultimately led to the dismantling of the extensive drug smuggling network.
