A neighborhood is in sorrow following the tragic death of an eight-year-old boy who collided with an e-bike while heading home from school.

The incident occurred when Zeke Hondow was riding along a bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange at Mountain Creek on a Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, he collided with a 15-year-old boy who was also on an e-bike. Both riders were wearing helmets during the accident.

Zeke was immediately taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in critical condition, but despite the efforts of medical teams, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

According to a Queensland Police spokesperson, the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the fatal crash involving the two e-bikes. The primary school-aged boy was the victim who tragically lost his life, while the high school-aged boy involved in the collision declined medical treatment and is cooperating with the police investigation.

Authorities are urging any witnesses or individuals with relevant footage of the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg expressed his condolences to Zeke’s family and emphasized the need for increased government efforts to address e-bike-related issues. He highlighted the importance of addressing the rapid technological advancements in e-bikes and the responsibility of governments at all levels to tackle associated challenges.

To support Zeke’s family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe page has been established to help alleviate the financial burden they are facing. The page has already raised over $6,000 in donations.
