Top jockey Clifford Lee out of coma after accident

Must read

Top jockey Clifford Lee has emerged from a medically induced coma following a motorcycle accident during his vacation. The 29-year-old sustained a neck fracture after falling headfirst and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. Lee, who had a stellar year with 94 wins, faces an extended period off the racing circuit as confirmed by his employer, Karl Burke.

Burke provided an update stating, “He has now come out of the induced coma, which is a positive development. He will undergo surgery to address the fractures. With his resilience, we are optimistic that he will successfully navigate the operation and commence his recovery journey.”

In a highlight from August, Lee achieved a remarkable milestone in his racing career by clinching the Prix Morny at Deauville riding Venetian Sun. Additionally, he secured notable victories this summer aboard horses like Royal Champion, Al Qareem, and Convergent.

Despite his recent success, Lee was serving a suspension when he decided to take a break in Greece before traveling to Scotland with his family, where the unfortunate accident occurred.

Burke expressed shock upon learning of the incident, mentioning, “I was unaware that he rode motorbikes. It’s a tragic event, but it could have been far worse.”

In the year 2025, Lee’s horses amassed a total of £2.3 million in earnings in Britain, with Al Qareem, a resilient stayer, contributing significantly with £237,857 from four wins.

Hailing from south-east London, Lee, not born into a racing family, demonstrated exceptional skill in judging pace, notably showcased in consecutive wins in the Cambridgeshire, a fiercely competitive handicap race, on horses trained by Burke.

Well-wishers have flooded Lee with messages of support as he recuperates in a hospital in Edinburgh. One supporter mentioned, “Wishing Clifford Lee a speedy recovery; he has been exceptional this season. It won’t be surprising if he lands a significant role soon.”

Another comment read, “Hoping Clifford Lee makes a swift recovery from this unusual accident.”
