Tom McKibbin’s Stellar 60 Ignites Masters and Open Hopes

Must read

Tom McKibbin, a rising star in LIV Golf, credited his record-breaking 60 at the Hong Kong Open to his drive to secure spots in the Masters and the Open. Despite advice from fellow Ulsterman Rory McIlroy to join the Saudi-backed tour earlier in the year, McKibbin pursued his own path.

Having excelled in the Race to Dubai last season and earning a PGA Tour playing card, McKibbin finished 17th in the individual standings in his debut LIV season, banking $5,768,351. However, he currently sits at world No.109 and is not qualified for the Majors next year.

The Hong Kong Open not only boasts a $2 million prize fund but also offers coveted spots at Augusta and Royal Birkdale for the top player not already exempt. McKibbin, aiming for his first Masters appearance, achieved his best professional score with a stellar opening round of 60.

Expressing his motivation, McKibbin emphasized the allure of competing for these prestigious spots, stating, “For these events to have those spots up for grabs, they definitely motivate you to go out and play well, knowing what’s sort of on the table come the end of the week.”

Having turned professional in 2021, McKibbin made waves by becoming the youngest Irish winner on the DP World Tour since McIlroy. Joining Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team for a reported $4 million marked a significant milestone, surpassing his previous career earnings.

Despite concerns voiced by McIlroy about missing out on the Majors and the Ryder Cup, McKibbin embraced his decision, emphasizing the opportunity to compete consistently with top talents. Notably, his move culminated in a career-defining performance at the Hong Kong Open.

In a separate development, Graeme McDowell, the 2010 US Open champion, faced challenges upon his arrival in Hong Kong, playing under-prepped and underplayed, resulting in a modest opening round of 69 due to delayed club deliveries.

Looking ahead, upcoming tournaments like the Australian Open in December and the South African Open in February will offer further chances for LIV players to secure coveted spots in the Masters. Additionally, the Hong Kong Open contributes to the International Series Rankings on the Asian Tour, offering an invite to the top-performing player in the series.
