A young TikTok influencer was tragically killed by suspected jihadists in a live broadcast while her family witnessed the horrific event.
Mariam Cisse, a 22-year-old with a significant online following of over 100,000 followers, was reportedly abducted from a small town in the Timbuktu region of Mali last week. She was taken from a local fair in Tonka by her captors who accused her of aiding the Malian army by sharing their activities online.
Mali’s security forces have been engaged in a long-standing battle against jihadist groups since 2012. The country is currently facing a severe fuel blockade in Bamako, imposed by the jihadists, causing disruptions in daily life. Shortly after her abduction, Mariam was transported by motorcycle to Independence Square.
In a public display witnessed by hundreds, including her own family, she was ruthlessly shot to death. The public nature of her killing has deeply shocked the nation amid escalating unrest. State TV reported that Mariam’s intention was simply to showcase her community and show support for the army through her social media presence.
Her tragic demise comes at a time when Mali is grappling with deteriorating living conditions due to the ongoing blockade. Schools and universities were forced to close last month as a result. Efforts are being made by the government to resolve the crisis promptly to reopen educational institutions.
Her brother, speaking to AFP, confirmed that she had been accused of collaborating with the Malian army. Another source, speaking anonymously, described the act as barbaric, revealing that Mariam was executed in Tonky for allegedly filming jihadist activities on behalf of the army.
Mariam often appeared in military-style attire in her videos to express solidarity with the Malian troops combating extremist factions. Her posts, including one with the caption “Vive Mali (Long Live Mali),” reflected her support for the country.
While most of her online content portrayed a normal life, showcasing her daily routines and love for dancing in her hometown, Mariam was cherished in her community for her authenticity and warmth.
