Stars of The Traitors may be competing to win a huge cash prize – but terrifying rules around their involvement in the game could see them bankrupted in real life if they speak out of turn.
The hit BBC show is current in its third season – with fans tuning in each week to see if the faithfuls can find the dishonest players within their midst and try to progress to the final. The show itself was filmed last year – with the results known to those taking part months before it began to air on TV.
And in order to ensure that the participants don’t ruin the results for fans watching along at home, they are all threatened with the very real risk of being sued for hundreds of thousands of pounds if the leak the results in advance. The threat of financial ruin seems to work as leaks about the show results have not made their way to the public domain.
Season two contestant Jaz Singh, 31, has explained that the rules of the show make it very clear that participants will be crippled financially if they let slip any of the results. He also explained that everyone taking part in the show has to brace themselves for keeping the secrets from those closest to them.
Speaking to The Sun he revealed: “You have to get a ton of stuff prepared, how you’re going to deliver this information to various family members to keep this a secret, because you’re under an NDA, and they will sue you for hundreds of thousands of pounds of TV damages if this gets leaked.”
He also shared details of his auditioning process – and said that the line of questioning from show makers is so intensive that he felt he was taking part in the show long before the cameras started rolling. Thinking back to applying to take part, Jaz recalled: “It took me about two hours, going from what’s your biggest fear, what’s your biggest lie, did you ever get away with it? They want to do a psychoanalysis on you inside and out, so they know you before even speaking to you, so they know what questions to present.”
He revealed: “I got an email back saying, ‘Jaz, we’d like to talk to you’. Following on from there, which I thought still not a chance, I went through a hundred Zooms, a hundred auditions.”
And he said: “So it is such a tactful process, and then to get on eventually, it’s mind-blowing. You are playing the game before you even enter that castle, before you even get a tap on the shoulder, before you put them blindfolds on, before Claudia says ‘hello’.”
The current season of the BBC show has seen 25 contestants slowly get whittled down as the traitors themselves have picked off some contestants, while the blundering faithfuls have developed an abysmal knack for voting for innocent members of their team to be banished after wrongly guessing who the traitors could be. The show, presented by Claudia Winkleman, will conclude this month.
