“Spanish Military Deployed to Ibiza Amid Severe Flooding”

Must read

The military has been deployed to Ibiza for the second time in less than two weeks due to additional flooding causing disruptions on the island. Severe weather conditions yesterday led to the closure of Ibiza’s airport for about an hour and a half. Storm Alice unleashed heavy rainfall on Spain’s east coast, affecting Ibiza and causing the cancellation of 24 flights at the airport. The terminal experienced leaks and power cuts due to the downpour, with images showing flooded roads in the area.

Authorities from Spanish airports authority AENA reported that airport operations were halted temporarily due to adverse weather conditions. Twelve incoming and twelve outgoing flights were canceled, impacting British holidaymakers. Police videos depicted vehicles stranded in floodwaters, with several roads in Ibiza Town closed.

Specialist military personnel from the UME Armed Forces unit were called back to Ibiza from their base near Valencia at the request of regional governors to assist in responding to the flood warnings. The troops were expected to arrive early in the morning to aid in the emergency situation. Ibiza Town’s mayor, Rafa Triguero, confirmed road closures and emphasized the importance of safety while urging residents to stay indoors if possible.

Other parts of Ibiza, including Playa d’en Bossa, San Jose, and Santa Eularia, also experienced flooding. Residents described the situation on the island as “devastating,” with neighboring islands Majorca and Formentera also facing weather-related issues. Previous flooding on September 30 caused damage to Ibiza’s nightclubs and hotels, with injuries reported at a local hotel. The army assisted in the rescue and clean-up efforts on the island.

Before reaching the Balearic Islands, Storm Alice affected areas such as Murcia on the Spanish mainland. Coastal regions like San Javier and Los Alcazares saw rescue operations for people trapped in their cars due to the storm.
