Sky Sports poked fun at Ipswich Town fan Ed Sheeran by using lyrics from one of his songs after Manchester City put six past them on Sunday.
The champions, who have been in and out of form in recent weeks, looked back to their prolific best as they ruthlessly took apart the Premier League strugglers. Pep Guardiola’s side eventually returned home with all three points after a resounding 6-0 success.
It did nothing for Ipswich’s survival hopes with Sheeran watching on. The music icon is a lifelong fan of the club and acquired a minority stake in the Tractor Boys last summer, regularly being seen at Portman Road as he’s also a sponsor of the team’s shirt.
The 33-year-old was trolled by Sky Sports with his side 4-0 down just after half-time as he watched on. A photo of the singer was shared on social media alongside a caption of slightly adjusted lyrics to sum up the state of affairs. It read: “Loving (football) can hurt sometimes!”
The lyrics come from Sheeran’s song ‘Photograph’ which was released back in 2015. He has watched on as the club he supports enjoyed successive promotions, seeing them go from League One to the Premier League, but they face a tall order if they are to retain their top flight status.
Phil Foden put City ahead with Mateo Kovacic doubling their lead minutes later. Foden adding his second before half-time to all but kill the contest in Suffolk.
In the second half Jeremy Doku added a fourth before laying on Erling Haaland to finish as he celebrated signing his new deal. Further gloss was added to the scoreline when James McAtee, the latest product of the club’s academy, continued to show his class with a headed finish.
Guardiola was particularly impressed with the display and saw signs of City getting back to their best. He said: “We are back to doing things that define this team for the last 10 years. Really pleased for the three points and to climb into qualification for the Champions League for next season, that will be so tough.
“Maybe not our best but closer with the consistency we have in our game. Most of them didn’t happen in the previous games that we won.”
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said: “Playing against that level is new to us, there’s no doubt about that. We know how quickly we’ve climbed the ladder.”
