He pointed out that their breathing patterns, warmth, and presence create a soothing effect akin to a hug.

Sleeping alongside your pet can increase oxytocin levels, known as the “feel-good” hormone, while decreasing cortisol, a stress-related hormone. This can uplift your mood and facilitate falling asleep more easily, according to the veterinarian. Both the National Sleep Foundation and the American Psychiatric Association acknowledge that having a pet around can ease anxiety, combat loneliness, and enhance feelings of security, especially for individuals living alone.

Research from Washington State University has demonstrated that spending just ten minutes petting a dog or cat significantly reduces cortisol levels. This biological response explains why interacting with pets can be so rejuvenating. Building trust and emotional connections during these intimate moments is also cited by veterinarian Pablo as beneficial. Many pet owners report waking up in a better mood and experiencing reduced depressive symptoms.

However, it’s not without drawbacks. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine warns that one-third of pet owners who share their bed with pets experience frequent sleep disruptions. Pets have different sleep patterns, may move around, snore, or wake up early, all of which can impact human sleep quality. Additionally, there are potential health risks to consider.

Pets can harbor parasites, bacteria, and allergens, especially if they are not vaccinated or regularly dewormed. For individuals with allergies or asthma, pet hair in the bed can exacerbate symptoms. The Mayo Clinic emphasizes the importance of proper veterinary care for pets to minimize infection risks and recommends maintaining good hygiene practices, such as brushing pets, washing bedding regularly, and scheduling routine check-ups.

Sleeping with a pet in the same bed could foster emotional dependency, potentially increasing separation anxiety when the owner is away. Some experts suggest letting pets sleep in their own bed within the bedroom. It’s crucial to weigh the benefits and risks and make a decision that prioritizes the safety and well-being of both the pet and the owner, as per specialist advice.
