A tragic incident unfolded at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, where a 53-year-old school staff member, Amy Morrell, lost her life after allegedly being kicked in the chest by a 14-year-old female student. The altercation occurred when the teenager tried to leave a residence hall without permission around 6:55 pm on Wednesday, prompting Morrell to intervene and subsequently suffer the fatal blow.
Following the attack, Morrell collapsed and despite immediate CPR efforts by colleagues and emergency services’ swift response, she passed away the following day. The unnamed teenager was charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and appeared in court the morning after the incident.
Described as a comprehensive therapeutic residential school near the Rhode Island border, Meadowridge Academy caters to individuals aged 12 to 21 dealing with mental health and behavioral challenges. With a small enrollment of just 35 students last year, the academy’s tragic episode has sparked discussions about the need for more attention on schools like it, according to advocates.
Jennie DunKley, a special needs advocate, highlighted the importance of implementing preventive strategies to avoid escalation and the use of restraint. Expressing hope that such incidents lead to meaningful changes, she emphasized the significance of addressing underlying issues to eliminate the need for extreme measures.
Operated by the Justice Resource Institute, Meadowridge Academy is one of several educational institutions under its umbrella. In response to the devastating loss, the academy community expressed deep sorrow over Morrell’s passing and offered support services for both students and staff during this challenging time. Authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
