Vladimir Putin has finally spoken out in response to the sanctions imposed by Donald Trump on Russia, issuing a stern warning to the US President. Trump’s sanctions targeted Russia’s top two oil companies in an effort to push Moscow towards a resolution with Ukraine. Despite Trump’s recent amicable call with Putin, he expressed disappointment over the lack of substantial progress.
Putin, addressing the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow, emphasized the importance of dialogue over conflict, stating that communication is preferable to war. He stressed the need for continued discussions to resolve disputes peacefully.
Following Trump’s remark that his conversations with Putin lead nowhere, Putin cautioned that Russia would strongly retaliate against any potential attacks from Ukraine, particularly if advanced US-made Tomahawk missiles were deployed. He underscored that Russia’s response would be forceful to deter any aggression.
In response to queries about Trump’s shifting stance towards Russia, spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt mentioned that the sanctions were a fulfillment of the President’s longstanding commitment. She highlighted Trump’s frustration with Putin and the ongoing conflict, noting that the prospect of a future meeting between the leaders was not ruled out. However, she emphasized the need for concrete progress and a beneficial outcome from any potential discussions, leaving the decision on further sanctions to Trump.
