Must read

At least 24 individuals lost their lives during demonstrations against the military regime in Myanmar when an individual flying a paraglider dropped two explosive devices into the crowd.

Approximately 100 individuals had assembled in Chaung U township in central Myanmar on Monday to observe Thadingyut, the conclusion of Buddhist Lent, and were the intended targets of the government’s bombs.

The military junta in Myanmar took control in 2021, leading to a civil conflict. Despite losing control of over half of the country, the army is reclaiming territory through intense airstrikes.

The specific location that was attacked serves as a crucial battleground in the ongoing conflict with armed resistance factions, including volunteer militias collectively known as the People’s Defence Force (PDF) that emerged following the coup.

A local official informed BBC Burmese about the assault that occurred during the gathering on Monday, despite efforts by authorities to disperse the protesters swiftly. The bombs were dropped within a span of seven minutes, causing casualties and injuries among the attendees.

One individual who was present during the attack mentioned sustaining leg injuries and witnessing fatalities among the crowd. Locals mentioned the challenges in identifying the deceased following the tragic event.

A woman involved in organizing the event described the aftermath of the attack, noting the gruesome scenes of children being severely affected. The use of paramotors by the junta to target civilians has raised concerns and Amnesty International has called for urgent protection for civilians in Myanmar.

Myanmar’s ruling authorities have faced limitations in acquiring military resources due to international sanctions, although countries like China and Russia continue to provide advanced military technology, enhancing the junta’s military capabilities.

The peaceful candlelight vigil held on Monday aimed to oppose military conscription and the upcoming election, while also advocating for the release of political detainees, including the deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
