President Donald Trump sparked outrage among social media users after a condescending interaction with a female reporter where he evaded her questions with what many considered a misogynistic response. During an event at the White House, the journalist queried about China’s activities in Latin America and the US role, to which Trump interrupted, turning to his Vice President with a smirk and remarking, “I just like to watch her talk.”
In a dismissive and disrespectful manner, Trump commended the reporter with a “Good job. Thank you, darling,” without addressing her inquiry. The incident, captured on video, went viral, with viewers criticizing Trump for belittling the reporter for simply doing her job. This behavior is not new, as another incident on Air Force One involved Trump shutting down a different female reporter’s questions about tariffs in China, dismissing her and labeling her media outlet as “fake news.”
Trump’s history of disrespectful treatment towards women in the media dates back to 2015 when he made derogatory remarks about female journalists. His pattern of belittling and targeting women in the press has continued throughout his presidency, with Trump resorting to personal attacks and derogatory comments to silence and discredit female reporters. This behavior has been widely criticized as misogynistic and reflects a troubling trend of mistreatment towards women in journalism.
The Executive Director of the International Women’s Media Foundation pointed out that Trump’s attacks on female journalists exhibit clear misogynistic tendencies aimed at silencing, demeaning, and discrediting them. These attacks are designed to undermine the credibility and professionalism of female reporters, perpetuating a culture of hostility and sexism towards women in the media.
