The incident unfolds as the couple is seen walking together when Richardson grabs Coleman’s backpack from behind.
In the footage, Richardson is observed pushing Coleman against a support column during what appears to be a tense conversation. Onlookers become aware of the commotion as the couple moves out of view. Upon reappearing on camera, they are seen heading towards security with Richardson continuing to interact aggressively with Coleman.
Another angle of the video seems to capture Richardson throwing an object at Coleman before walking away. Subsequently, Coleman is seen speaking with a group of police officers following the altercation. Richardson, who had achieved gold in the 4x100m relay event with Team USA, faced legal consequences, including an 18-hour detention for fourth-degree assault before being released. Coleman later confirmed that he opted not to press charges.
According to Port of Seattle Police, Richardson reported that the dispute stemmed from Coleman taking her headphones. The police report indicated that Richardson denied physically assaulting Coleman and characterized the incident as a verbal argument.
In defense of Richardson, Coleman expressed his perspective on the situation, stating, “For me personally, I feel like it was a difficult situation overall.” He emphasized his willingness to show understanding and compassion, highlighting their positive working relationship throughout the year.
