Men with a history of working in mines and industries will receive enhanced support from the NHS as part of England’s inaugural Men’s Health Strategy. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has committed to assisting men in former mining communities who have faced longstanding health disparities due to their occupational hazards.
The upcoming strategy, set to be revealed on International Men’s Day, includes a £1 million allocation to the respiratory pathways transformation fund to specifically aid miners. This funding will facilitate the identification and support of individuals at risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), ensuring timely care to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations.
Organizations in regions with industrial legacies and documented health disparities will benefit from the funding, ensuring that communities with elevated rates of respiratory illnesses are targeted for support. The overarching goal of the Men’s Health Strategy is to address health disparities among men, focusing on critical issues like mental health, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and heart disease.
Streeting emphasized the importance of acknowledging men’s health needs, particularly those who worked in demanding and hazardous professions like mining, leading to respiratory health challenges. The strategy aims to proactively identify and care for former miners at high risk or already affected by respiratory diseases to provide them with better healthcare promptly.
Chris Kitchen, the General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, expressed appreciation for the Men’s Health Strategy and the additional support announced for mineworkers with respiratory conditions. The strategy will expand the existing Respiratory Pathways Transformation Fund by injecting an extra £1 million to develop targeted initiatives in former coalfield areas, such as those impacted by COPD.
The strategy’s plan includes enhancing case-finding efforts to ensure affected individuals receive the necessary support to access local services effectively. The Men’s Health Strategy will monitor progress and incorporate insights into its one-year report to continue advancing the well-being of men in these communities.
