“NHS Nurses Struggle Under Staffing Crisis”

Must read

Nurses in NHS hospitals and care homes are facing severe challenges due to chronic understaffing, a recent survey reveals. The Royal College of Nursing highlights that workforce shortages are causing significant distress among healthcare workers, leading to nightmares, panic attacks, and a reluctance to take sick leave even when unwell.

According to the survey of over 20,000 UK nursing staff, a concerning 66% admitted to working while ill multiple times a year, a significant increase from 2017. Stress emerged as the primary cause of illness, with 65.1% of respondents attributing their health issues to stress, a notable rise from previous years.

The survey also found that a staggering 70% of nurses are exceeding their contracted hours on a weekly basis, with approximately half doing so without compensation. NHS data for June further reveals that the sickness absence rate among NHS staff in England was 4.9%, with nurses and health visitors experiencing higher rates at 5.3%.

Several healthcare workers shared their experiences, with one nurse developing a stress-related chronic illness but feeling obligated to continue working due to overwhelming departmental demands. Another nurse reported experiencing nightmares due to stress caused by understaffing.

The Royal College of Nursing’s General Secretary, Professor Nicola Ranger, emphasized the detrimental impact of understaffing on nursing staff’s well-being, highlighting the unsustainable nature of the current situation. Responding to the concerns raised, a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care outlined measures being taken to improve working conditions for nurses, including enhancing occupational health support, promoting flexible working arrangements, and addressing workplace issues such as violence and harassment.

Efforts are also being made to create more job opportunities for qualified nurses and midwives to alleviate the burden on existing staff and improve the overall healthcare environment.
