“MI5 Warns MPs of Chinese Spy Recruitment in Westminster”

Must read

MI5 has issued an urgent alert to Members of Parliament (MPs) following the discovery of multiple attempts by Chinese spies to “recruit and nurture” insiders within Westminster.

During a session in the Commons, Security Minister Dan Jarvis revealed that Chinese intelligence operatives are masquerading as businesses or external recruitment agents to target MPs, Lords, and Parliamentary personnel. The spies are reportedly utilizing LinkedIn profiles under the identities of two women to gather sensitive information.

Jarvis informed a shocked audience of MPs: “Earlier today, MI5 circulated a warning to members of the House, the Lords, and Parliamentary staff about the ongoing efforts by Chinese entities to target our democratic institutions.”

He cautioned that China places a low threshold on the value of information and emphasized that individuals with access to sensitive data about Parliament and the UK government are being actively sought after. This activity is allegedly being orchestrated by a group of Chinese intelligence officers disguising themselves through the use of front companies or external recruiters.

“It’s not only lawmakers who should be wary of this threat; individuals such as Parliamentary staff, economists, think tank personnel, geopolitical consultants, and government officials have also been singled out for their connections and access to politicians,” Jarvis added.

The Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has reportedly communicated with her Chinese counterpart, making it explicitly clear that such conduct will not be accepted. Jarvis announced that the Government is set to combat covert political financing to weed out potential spies and is working on empowering measures to counter foreign interference.

In a communication to parliamentarians, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle highlighted the attempts by the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) to establish contact within Westminster, aiming to gather information and establish lasting relationships through professional networking platforms and recruitment intermediaries.

The alert specifically mentioned two recruiters, Amanda Qiu (BR-YR Executive Search) and Shirly Shen (Internship Union), who are allegedly leveraging LinkedIn profiles on behalf of China’s MSS. The MI5 alert underscored the MSS’s objective of acquiring sensitive information on the UK for strategic leverage and warned of the specific tactics employed by a highly active group of officers.

Jarvis disclosed plans to allocate £170 million for the enhancement of the sovereign-encrypted technology utilized by officials and an additional £130 million to bolster the UK’s defenses against threats emanating from countries like China.
