“Mesmerizing Northern Lights and Arctic Adventures in Lapland”

Must read

A trip to Lapland may be a dream come true for many children, but the adults in our group were just as thrilled when we were treated to the mesmerizing sight of the Northern Lights during our journey to northern Sweden. Witnessing this natural phenomenon on two consecutive nights was a stroke of luck that made the experience truly unforgettable.

Each day in Lapland brought new adventures, such as dog sledding, snowshoe hiking, fire-building lessons, interactions with the indigenous Sámi people and their reindeer, and even taking a dip in the icy waters of the Bothnian Sea while wearing survival suits.

Located in the Arctic region, Lapland encompasses the northern part of Scandinavia, with Luleå being the largest city and a convenient starting point for exploring the enchanting landscapes of towering pine forests and clear blue skies.

From early August to late April, visitors have the chance to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis, with temperatures plummeting as low as -30°C from December to February.

Our accommodation at Brändön Lodge, situated along the Bothnian Sea and a short drive from Luleå Airport, provided a cozy and scenic base for our adventures. The lodge’s 15 cabins offer stunning views of the Luleå archipelago and the Bay of Bothnia, equipped with essential winter gear. The main lodge features a restaurant, bar, and lounge area, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration, as well as sauna facilities for relaxation.

We also had the opportunity to stay at the eco-lodge Arctic Retreat in Överstbyn, where luxury log cabins nestled by the Råne River offered a peaceful retreat. The cabins boast outdoor hot tubs, indoor fireplaces, and ample living space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Our dining experiences were equally memorable, from enjoying a gourmet meal in a cozy setting across the frozen bay to cooking reindeer over an open fire in a teepee. We savored a variety of local delicacies, including fresh fish, meatballs, reindeer, elk, and lingonberries, with options available for vegans and vegetarians.

Activities like ice fishing, snowshoe hiking, and meeting the Sámi people provided insights into the region’s rich culture and natural beauty. For the adventurous souls, a visit to Arctic Bath for a unique sauna and ice bath ritual, along with a thrilling icebreaker cruise on the Bothnian Sea, offered exhilarating experiences.

The breathtaking display of the Northern Lights illuminated the night sky, casting a magical glow that captivated us all. Swedish Lapland truly felt like a real-life Narnia, enchanting and awe-inspiring.
