Mercedes has received advice to finalize a contract extension for Kimi Antonelli, despite the challenges the young driver has been facing. Antonelli, an Italian, had an impressive debut in Formula 1, securing fourth place in the Australian Grand Prix at just 18 years old.
Following his debut success, Antonelli continued to impress with consecutive sixth-place finishes in China and Japan. Notably, he clinched pole position in Miami and achieved his first podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix.
However, Antonelli’s performance has taken a downturn in recent races, coinciding with the increased difficulty of driving the Mercedes car due to upgrades. Despite finishing ninth and earning points at Monza, Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, expressed disappointment in Antonelli’s race pace, especially after slipping from his initial grid position.
Wolff, who previously supported Antonelli despite setbacks, labeled his performance at Monza as “underwhelming.” Although Wolff had previously stated that both Antonelli and George Russell would receive contract extensions for the 2026 season, no agreements have been finalized.
To provide stability for Antonelli, Sky Sports commentator David Croft suggested that Mercedes expedite the contract negotiation process to boost the young driver’s confidence. Croft emphasized the importance of reassuring Antonelli about his future with the team to help him overcome any negative thoughts.
Additionally, former champion Nico Rosberg highlighted Wolff’s change in approach towards Antonelli at Monza, indicating a potential strategy to motivate the young driver to improve. Rosberg acknowledged Antonelli’s exceptional talent but noted the unexpected difficulties he has been facing in his rookie year.
