“Meet Elsie Eiler: Mayor, Librarian, Postmaster, & Tavern Owner”

Must read

In the tiniest town in the US, a remarkable woman takes on multiple roles as mayor, librarian, postmaster, and sole business proprietor.

Elsie Eiler, a hardworking Nebraskan in her 90s, embodies the entrepreneurial spirit typically associated with younger generations. She and her late husband, Rudy, established the Monowi Tavern in the sparsely populated region nearly 50 years ago. Following Rudy’s passing in 2004, Elsie continued to manage the tavern single-handedly as other residents either passed away or relocated, leaving her as the sole inhabitant.

Despite the town’s dwindling population and aging infrastructure, Elsie’s tavern has emerged as a beacon, attracting tourists intrigued by Monowi’s unique status as the smallest incorporated town in the country. Visitors flock from far and wide to meet Elsie, who not only runs the business, but also fulfills duties as mayor, librarian, and postmaster.

Maintaining the tavern as a community hub, Elsie warmly welcomes around 50 guests daily, prepares delicious meals, and ensures the establishment remains inviting. She self-elects herself as mayor, drafts annual municipal plans, and manages utility taxes to sustain the town’s operations.

Elsie described the tavern as a friendly gathering place for locals and visitors alike, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Regular patrons, including Boyd County Sheriff Chuck Wrede and agricultural workers like Jeff Uhlir, frequent the tavern for meetings and social gatherings.

Despite her advanced age, Elsie shows no signs of slowing down, expressing contentment and dedication to Monowi. Her unwavering commitment to the town and its residents is evident in her ongoing efforts to maintain the tavern’s legacy and charm.

In her own words, Elsie reaffirmed her commitment to Monowi, stating, “Each year I just renew my license and stay again. I mean, basically…I’m happy here. This is where I really – I want to be here, or I wouldn’t stay here.”
