Max Verstappen Tackles GT Racing Challenge

Must read

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 world champion, ventured into GT racing during a break between the Italian and Azerbaijani Grands Prix. Taking on the challenge at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany, Verstappen participated in the ADAC Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie rounds seven and eight. Unlike his recent triumph at Monza where he clinched victory from pole position, the Dutch driver faced a different scenario this time, getting overtaken by seven competitors at the start.

The reason behind Verstappen’s slow start was his participation under restricted conditions. Driving a Red Bull-themed Porsche Cayman GT4 #980, he had not yet obtained his full racing license for the Nurburgring track. However, after passing a test and receiving a B permit, Verstappen was allowed to compete over the weekend. Previously, he had set an unofficial lap record at the circuit in May using the alias ‘Franz Hermann.’

Due to his current permit limitations, Verstappen’s car was deliberately slowed down, giving him a disadvantage of 130 horsepower compared to rivals in the same Cup3 class. Nevertheless, he showcased his skills by posting an impressive lap time of 10:21.591, outpacing his GT4 competitors by over 25 seconds and securing sixth place in his class and 27th overall.

To obtain his full license, Verstappen must complete 14 incident-free laps in his GT4. If successful, he plans to return in two weeks to race a Ferrari 296 GT3 during the 57th ADAC Barbarossapreis. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, brother of Michael Schumacher, criticized the delay in granting Verstappen his full license, emphasizing his exceptional driving abilities.

Verstappen expressed his enjoyment of exploring different racing categories outside of F1, highlighting a more relaxed atmosphere while maintaining his competitive spirit. He emphasized the importance of savoring moments and balancing his racing career with family time. Supporters can gear up for the new F1 season by grabbing up to 70 percent off on Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing teamwear, merchandise, and memorabilia at the F1 Store sale.
