Manchester City have completed the £30m signing of wonderkid Vitor Reis as Pep Guardiola’s rebuild gathers steam.
The reigning champions have struggled this term, already finding themselves 12 points behind Liverpool in the race for the title. But they have remained determined to force themselves back into contention, with Reis representing a significant capture.
The teenager has completed a £30m move from Brazilian side Palmeiras and signed a four-and-a-half year deal. Speaking after the switch was confirmed, Reis said: “I’m excited to join Manchester City, one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“Everyone has seen the amazing achievements in recent seasons, and I want to make my mark as we seek more trophies. Working with Pep Guardiola is something every young player wants to do, and I know he can help me to develop into the best player I can be.
“City also have a lot of experience of working with Brazilian footballers and joining the likes of Ederson and Savinho in the squad will be a big help to me.”
Director of football Txiki Berigirstain added: “Vitor Reis is one of the most promising young defenders in the world and we’re delighted to been able to bring him here. In his short time in senior football in Brazil, he has shown he has the ability to go very far in the game and we know that working with Pep and our coaches will help to get the best out of him.
“He is excellent on the ball and outstanding in the air – he has all the attributes needed to be one of the best. Vitor is very young, but his quality is so high that we believe he can help us now and for a long time into the future.”
Reis is already the second defensive addition City have made this month. They have also signed Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for £34m – with City planning an ambitious £250m rebuild.

The expensive additions do not look set to end there, either. Omar Marmoush is putting the final touches on a £68m move from German side Eintracht Frankfurt, while Juventus stars Andrea Cambiaso and Douglas Luiz have also been linked with switches to the Etihad Stadium before the end of the month.
Should all of those be completed – alongside the arrival of River Plate wonderkid Claudio Echeverri – it will give City’s squad a completely different look heading into the second half of the campaign. And even that is without mentioning Erling Haaland’s record-breaking nine-and-a-half year deal.
Regarding exits, captain Kyle Walker is closing in on a move away from City. He is set to link up with AC Milan having flown Italy to undergo a medical ahead of an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent switch.
