Lammy Slams Farage’s “Pound Shop Patriotism”

Must read

David Lammy criticized Nigel Farage’s form of patriotism as detrimental to Britain, labeling it as “pound shop patriotism.” The Deputy PM condemned Farage’s proposal to revoke indefinite leave to remain, even for those who were already granted it, as racist during his address at the Labour Party Conference. Lammy emphasized that Farage’s policies do not align with British values despite his outward display of nationalism.

He denounced the idea of rounding up and deporting individuals from diverse backgrounds who possess indefinite leave to remain, stating that such actions are racist and not in line with British culture or values. Lammy urged the conference attendees to reject this divisive approach and opt for genuine patriotism that uplifts people rather than the shallow nationalism that could harm the country.

Furthermore, Lammy encouraged the party to seek inspiration from progressive movements worldwide that have achieved success against challenging odds. Drawing parallels to political victories in countries like Australia, Canada, and Norway, he highlighted the importance of adhering to shared values as a guiding principle for progressive success.

The proposal by Reform UK to eliminate Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) could put hundreds of thousands of individuals living in the UK at risk of expulsion if the party gains power, raising concerns about the potential repercussions of such a policy shift.

Keir Starmer, on Sunday, strongly criticized Nigel Farage’s plans, warning that they could “tear the UK apart” and emphasizing the need to protect the rights of neighbors within the community. Speaking out against Reform UK’s proposal, Starmer highlighted the divisive nature of the policy and called for a united stance against it during the first day of the Labour conference.
