A member of the Labour Party representing Hillsborough families has raised concerns about the potential risks of overlooking safety issues at football stadiums. Paula Barker, who serves as the MP for Liverpool Wavertree, drew attention to the tragic events of 1989 in light of the Government’s efforts to facilitate the attendance of Israeli fans at an upcoming football match in Birmingham.
The discussion arose following the exclusion of Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from a Europa League match against Aston Villa due to safety worries. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy pledged to allocate necessary resources to assist law enforcement in ensuring the safety of fans at the forthcoming game. She expressed dismay over the decision, citing concerns related to the nationality and religion of the affected fans.
During a session in the Commons, Ms. Barker referenced the Hillsborough disaster, where 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in a stadium crush during an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. She emphasized the significance of addressing safety concerns that had been previously disregarded.
Commenting on the Maccabi Tel Aviv incident, she remarked on the importance of safety advisory groups and cautioned against dismissing safety apprehensions, labeling government attempts to overrule such advice as unprecedented.
In response, Ms. Nandy clarified that the government’s objective was not to overturn safety guidance but to collaborate with local authorities and law enforcement to ensure a secure environment for both sets of fans. She stressed the administration’s commitment to prioritizing fan and community safety.
