Labour leader Keir Starmer has emphasized the significance of the recent Gaza peace agreement, stating that it presents the most promising opportunity for a two-state resolution in decades. Starmer urged all parties involved to embrace this moment to bring an end to what he described as a dark chapter in history.

Addressing the Parliament, Starmer highlighted the immense suffering endured by hostage families and civilians in Gaza over the past two years, calling for a collective effort to rebuild the war-torn region. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed optimism about the newfound peace in the Middle East, describing it as a moment of great relief globally.

Starmer commended the UK’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state, attributing it to the progress towards peace. He emphasized that the peace deal, signed in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, offers a significant opportunity for a two-state solution, marking a milestone not seen since the Oslo Accords more than thirty years ago.

The Labour leader stressed the necessity of sustaining the peace achieved, acknowledging the complexities involved in the implementation of the peace plan. He credited US President Donald Trump for his role in the agreement while underscoring the UK’s efforts in securing a ceasefire, releasing hostages, and facilitating aid delivery to Gaza.

Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting the reconstruction of Gaza, describing it as a monumental task that requires international cooperation. He emphasized the urgency of providing humanitarian aid to Gaza and ensuring effective governance arrangements and ceasefire monitoring processes.

Additionally, Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, with a personal connection to Gaza, expressed mixed emotions following the ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of striving for a two-state solution for lasting peace in the region. Moran urged the Prime Minister to fulfill the promise of a Palestinian state, echoing the sentiment of her ancestors.

In response, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to working tirelessly towards achieving a lasting two-state solution, building upon the recent peace agreement and the collaborative efforts required for a sustainable resolution.
