Must read

Keir Starmer recently shared his personal experience of supporting his younger brother, Nick, through a terminal cancer diagnosis. In a heartfelt conversation on the Man Made podcast with reality TV personality Pete Wicks, the Prime Minister revealed that his late brother, who had learning disabilities, passed away at the age of 60, 18 months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Starmer recounted how he accompanied Nick to the hospital to ensure he wasn’t alone when receiving the devastating news of his condition. He emphasized the importance of being there for his brother during such a challenging time and helping him understand the implications of his diagnosis.

During Men’s Mental Health Month, the PM disclosed that he had been quietly visiting Nick at the hospital in Leeds for weeks before his cancer diagnosis. He expressed the difficulties of dealing with personal grief in the public eye and the struggle to find space for such emotions.

Describing Nick as a “good man,” Starmer praised his brother’s incredible kindness and willingness to help others despite facing financial hardships. He highlighted the strength found in acts of kindness, a trait he believes is often overlooked in discussions about masculinity.

In the interview, Starmer also discussed a homophobic attack on his niece in 2022, expressing his anger at the incident and raising concerns about growing societal divisions. He touched on the challenges faced by young men in finding positive role models and a sense of purpose in a changing world.

The PM emphasized the importance of steering young men away from toxic influences and providing them with a sense of self-worth. He acknowledged the evolving landscape of masculinity and the need to redefine traditional notions of role models for the benefit of future generations.
