“Healey Warns Putin: Russian Spy Ship Menaces UK Pilots”

Must read

The Defence Secretary, John Healey, has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a Russian spy ship that was recently spotted near UK waters aiming lasers at RAF pilots.

Healey criticized Russia’s “highly risky behavior” and emphasized that the UK has military strategies prepared in case the Yantar ship moves south. This incident marks the second time in the past year that the vessel has entered British waters to conduct surveillance on crucial undersea cables.

During a press briefing at Downing Street, the Defence Secretary stated, “Currently, the Yantar, a Russian spy ship, is positioned at the northern boundary of UK waters, having accessed the wider UK maritime territory over the past weeks. This vessel is specifically equipped for intelligence gathering and mapping underwater cables.”

“In response, we have dispatched a Royal Navy frigate and RAF aircraft to monitor and track the movements of this ship. Regrettably, the Yantar targeted lasers at our pilots during surveillance. Such actions by Russia pose significant risks, and this marks the second time this year that the ship has ventured into UK waters.”

Healey’s strong message to Russia and Putin was clear: “We are aware of your activities, and if the Yantar heads south this week, we are prepared.”

This warning follows a recent alert from a key Commons committee highlighting the UK’s lack of a comprehensive defense plan against military threats. To enhance readiness, Healey announced plans to establish at least 13 new arms manufacturing facilities across Britain.

The Yantar is part of a Russian naval fleet specifically designed to target critical undersea cables connecting the UK and Europe, which carry essential civilian and military communications, as well as power and gas supplies.

Healey noted that the ship possesses capabilities for surveillance during peacetime and potential sabotage during conflicts. When asked about the use of lasers by the Yantar against pilots, Healey confirmed, “This is the first instance of such actions by the Yantar against the British RAF, and we take it very seriously.”

He further indicated that he had adjusted the Navy’s rules of engagement to allow for closer monitoring of the Yantar’s activities within UK waters, with military responses prepared if needed.

As he highlighted the need for the UK to bolster its defense capabilities in an evolving threat landscape, Healey stated, “We are facing a new era of challenges. The world is becoming less predictable and more perilous. Recent events, such as conflicts in the Middle East and escalating tensions in various regions, underscore the need for heightened vigilance.”

“In light of these threats, we must adopt a stance of robust defense, strong alliances, and effective diplomacy. As risks escalate, Britain must elevate its efforts, and we are committed to doing so.”

Prior to the upcoming Budget announcement, Healey reassured that there would be no compromise on the strength and capabilities of the UK’s armed forces.
