“Global Leaders Gather for Historic Gaza Peace Summit”

Must read

The upcoming Gaza peace summit is deemed a critical step in putting an end to the ongoing conflict and violence in the region, as per anticipated remarks from Keir Starmer. Prime Minister, along with US President Donald Trump, is set to attend the peace plan signing ceremony in Sharm El-Sheikh. The event will also see the presence of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Starmer is expected to emphasize the importance of seizing the opportunity for a lasting peace and a secure future for the region. The UK pledges its support for the subsequent talks to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the peace plan, allowing both sides to rebuild their lives with safety and security.

At the summit, Starmer is likely to announce a £20 million aid package from the UK, part of a larger commitment of £116 million, to assist in providing water, sanitation, and hygiene services to thousands of civilians in Gaza. Yvette Cooper highlighted the collaborative efforts with global partners that culminated in Trump’s peace initiative.

However, Cooper stressed the urgent need for swift action in Gaza’s reconstruction, with nearly 92% of homes damaged or destroyed due to Israeli attacks, resulting in over 67,000 casualties in the past two years. The focus is now on scaling up humanitarian efforts and planning for Gaza’s recovery, including clearing rubble, repairing infrastructure, restoring healthcare, and rebuilding homes.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson acknowledged the UK’s significant role in diplomatic efforts but asserted that Hamas would not be involved in Gaza’s reconstruction. On the contrary, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel expressed disagreement with the UK’s alleged behind-the-scenes involvement.

Last month, the UK joined other nations like France, Australia, and Canada in formally recognizing Palestinian statehood, marking a historic diplomatic gesture.
