Vladimir Putin has been cautioned by a high-ranking German general about the potential for a sudden and aggressive attack on NATO countries in the near future. Lieutenant General Alexander Sollfrank, who leads Germany’s joint operations command, emphasized that Russia currently possesses the capability to execute a limited assault on NATO territories at short notice, contingent upon Western actions.
Sollfrank mentioned that Russia’s military build-up could enable a larger-scale attack on NATO by 2029, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts such as the situation in Ukraine. Despite the constraints posed by the conflict in Ukraine, Sollfrank highlighted Russia’s significant combat strength, particularly in its air force, nuclear capabilities, and missile forces.
While Sollfrank clarified that there is no concrete intelligence indicating an imminent attack, he expressed concerns based on Russia’s historical behavior and the decisions made by its leadership. He pointed out that Russia aims to bolster its troop numbers to 1.5 million soldiers and possesses sufficient military assets, including main battle tanks, to potentially launch a limited attack without delay.
In a separate development, UK Defence Secretary John Healey has expressed confidence in President Donald Trump’s ability to engage Vladimir Putin in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine, despite the current impasse in talks.
