France Criticizes US-Backed Ukraine Peace Plan

Must read

France has accused the United States of pressuring Ukraine into a new peace plan that would lead to “capitulation,” a plan crafted jointly by Washington and Moscow. The proposal includes 28 points that would require Kyiv to give up territory to Russia and reduce its military forces by half. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that peace should not equate to surrender and expressed opposition to Ukraine’s capitulation.

Criticism of the plan has been widespread among European leaders, with concerns raised about the secretive nature of the negotiations. The proposal, which shifts the focus from pressuring Russia economically to territorial concessions by Ukraine, has sparked controversy.

The plan, negotiated without Ukrainian involvement, also includes significant military restrictions for Ukraine, such as reducing armed forces, prohibiting long-range missiles, and limiting foreign troop deployments. Additionally, it suggests making Russian an official language and granting the Russian Orthodox Church formal status in occupied areas. However, Ukraine would be allowed to seek security guarantees from the US and European governments to stabilize any potential ceasefire.

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, strongly opposed the plan, particularly the idea of surrendering the valuable Donbas region to Russia. Zelensky rejected the notion of giving in to Moscow’s demands.

Foreign Minister Hamish Falconer of the UK emphasized that negotiations must be initiated from the current contact line and denounced any attempts to redraw international borders by force. Cooperation between Ukraine, the US, and European governments was stressed as crucial for reaching a just and lasting peace agreement.

While the US defended its approach, arguing that concessions were necessary for lasting peace, European diplomats called for consultations and stressed the importance of holding the aggressor, Russia, accountable rather than burdening the victim, Ukraine.

Western officials noted similarities between the current plan and demands previously made by Vladimir Putin during discussions with Trump in Alaska. The Kremlin emphasized the need to address root causes of the conflict for any peace agreement to be successful.

As tensions escalate, diplomatic efforts continue, with key players engaging in talks and negotiations to find a viable path towards peace in the region.
