Former Hurling Star DJ Carey Sentenced to Jail

Must read

Former Hurling star DJ Carey has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail for swindling nearly €400,000 from friends, family, and supporters under false pretenses of needing cancer treatment. Carey, a resident of Maynooth, Co Kildare, admitted to deceiving 13 individuals, including prominent figures like Denis O’Brien and Owen and Ann Conway, by falsely claiming he had cancer and required financial aid.

During the sentencing at Dublin’s Criminal Court of Justice, Judge Martin Nolan condemned Carey’s actions, describing them as an exploitation of people’s kindness and trust. The judge emphasized the severity of the deceitful behavior, labeling it as reprehensible. Despite noting that Carey is unlikely to reoffend, Judge Nolan highlighted the irreversible damage caused to Carey’s reputation.

The 52-year-old, once celebrated for his successful hurling career with Kilkenny, was visibly somber in court, donning a purple jacket, navy shirt, and black shoes. Following the sentencing, Carey was instructed to stand as he received the lengthy custodial sentence before being taken into custody.
