“Foilboarder Launched by Shark in Terrifying Encounter”

Must read

A dramatic incident unfolded as a foilboarder was unexpectedly launched out of the water by a large shark, captured on camera for viewers to witness.

Andy McDonald was enjoying his routine surf session at Prevelly Beach in Western Australia when the terrifying encounter occurred around 5:45 pm on November 10. Equipped with a foilboard, which features a hydrofoil and water wings for enhanced speed, he ventured onto the waves with a wingfoil sail.

Security footage recorded the moment the foilboard was dragged underwater by the shark, taking Mr. McDonald along with it as his wrist leash became entangled with the creature.

Surveillance cameras captured the foilboarder struggling in the water next to the massive shark after being struck by the animal, likened to a powerful impact akin to a freight train. Recounting the harrowing experience to 9News Australia, he described being propelled into the air by the shark, feeling as though he was riding atop it.

Despite the intense struggle with the shark, 61-year-old Mr. McDonald managed to fend off the predator and emerged from the water unharmed. His beloved foilboard, however, suffered a significant bite, visibly damaged with a chunk missing. A friend of Mr. McDonald, Neil Mattinson, expressed that the seriousness of the situation likely sank in once they reached the shore.

Mr. Mattinson commented on the damage to the board and Mr. McDonald’s shock at the scene, noting his friend’s initial uncertainty about whether he had been bitten in the chaos.

While details surrounding the incident remain somewhat unclear, experts are working to identify the shark species involved by extracting DNA from the damaged board. Despite a shark warning issued for the beach following the attack, the area remained open, not deterring dedicated surfers like the resilient 61-year-old foilboarder, who returned to the waves the day after the frightening encounter.
