An incident involving explosions at a school during Friday prayers in Indonesia has resulted in numerous injuries. The explosions occurred in the Kelapa Gading neighborhood of Jakarta earlier today, leaving three individuals in critical condition and a 17-year-old student identified as the suspected perpetrator. Additionally, around 17 other students are currently hospitalized following the incident.
The Indonesian Police bomb squad is actively investigating the mosque on the school premises where the explosions took place. Witnesses reported hearing two loud blasts shortly after midday, coinciding with the start of the sermon at the religious site.
Authorities from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police are delving into the background of the suspect and exploring potential motives for the event, which shook the Kelapa Gading area in North Jakarta. Some victims have been treated and released, as per local media sources.
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad disclosed that the suspect, a 17-year-old male student, is undergoing surgery. National Police Chief Listyo Sigit confirmed that the suspect is one of two students receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained in the explosions.
Sigit stated, “We have identified the suspected perpetrator. Our team is actively conducting an extensive investigation to ascertain the suspect’s identity, living environment, and any potential associates.” The police are also analyzing a toy submachine gun found at the scene with specific inscriptions for further insights into the motive behind the incident.
Most victims suffered injuries from glass fragments and burns. The exact cause of the explosions is not yet determined, although they originated near the mosque’s loudspeaker, according to Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, with 20 students currently receiving treatment for burns, including three with severe injuries.
