An ex-pilot formerly with Alaska Airlines, Joseph Emerson, narrowly avoided imprisonment after attempting to disable a passenger jet’s engines but expressed gratitude towards the flight crew for intervening. The incident occurred during a Horizon Air flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco on October 22, 2023, when Emerson, riding off-duty in the cockpit, made the dangerous move. The plane was diverted to Portland, where it landed safely with over 80 passengers on board.
In a hearing in Portland, Oregon, US District Court Judge Amy Baggio sentenced Emerson to time served and three years of supervised release. Prosecutors had sought a one-year prison term, while his defense team requested probation. Judge Baggio acknowledged the humanity of pilots, emphasizing that everyone needs support at times.
Emerson explained to authorities after his arrest that his actions stemmed from grief over a friend’s death, recent psychedelic mushroom use, and extreme sleep deprivation. He believed he was dreaming and attempted to activate the plane’s fire suppression system by pulling two red handles, thinking it would wake him up.
Before receiving his sentence, Emerson expressed remorse for the consequences of his actions, acknowledging personal growth resulting from the ordeal. He was released following the judge’s decision, with his story serving as a cautionary tale beyond the courtroom. Several individuals, including his wife, spoke in support of Emerson during the hearing, highlighting his positive transformation since the incident.
Emerson had previously pleaded guilty to all charges related to the incident. As part of his sentencing, Emerson received a state court sentence of 50 days in jail, five years of probation, and extensive community service. A significant portion of his community service can be completed at a pilot health nonprofit he established post-arrest. Additionally, he must comply with ongoing assessments and restrictions regarding aircraft proximity.
